Question
i help coach high school softball. we have a good hitting team when it comes to playing against good pitching teams with speed. when we play against slow pitching our team gets completely off balance. what is a good drill for working on making the ajustments when playing a team with slow pitching? l don't want them to think too much about the change-up since they will start to have slow hands thru the zone. we have worked very hard to get those quick hands. thank you for any advise.

Answer
The key to hitting slower pitchers is to delay the stride and keep the weight back so the hitter doesn't commit too early. The batter still keeps the same quick swing just delay the pre-motion (for example - instead of starting the stride at release, start it when the ball is 2/3 away). Make sure to have the batters time the pitcher in the on deck circle.
With the batter in normal batter position try this drill. Have them close their eyes then lob the ball. At release of the pitch yell "now" (for them to open the eyes) this forces them to focus on picking up the ball before striding and swinging.
