Shortstop positioning with runner on second

2016/7/15 17:59:05

Question
My sister is the shortstop on a 14U team.  Many times when a ball is hit her way with a runner on second base she seems to get hung up by the baserunner and ends up being late with her throw to first.  She probably plays five steps or so behind the baseline.  I've told her to scoot in a few steps but I'm not sure.  Also I've noticed that many shortstops play even with the basepaths and this really seems to close off the infield.  What positioning do you recommend for the shortstop in these and any other situations that may be tricky or unique?

Answer
Many if not most shortstops play behind the baseline. Doing this gives the shortstop more range. Moving up in the baseline or in front of it limits her lateral range. In certain situations she may need to move up or cheat left or right for bunting situations or coverage situations. One thing she needs to know is that she has the right to make a play so she needs to aggressively field the ball in front of her. If the base runner impedes, hinders or confuses a defensive player while attempting to make a play its interference. The umpire will call a dead ball and someone will be out.
