Question
I need to know if the pitcher is replaced on the mound if she can be re-entered as pitcher 2 innings later. Also if a runner crosses the plate before the 3rd out ending the inning dooes that run count.
Answer
Thanks for the question!
First of all to answer your substitution question; As long as the substitution conforms to normal starting player and substitution rules (2006 ASA Official Rules of Softball Rule 4), playing a particular position does not matter. Also the pitcher could not have been forcibly removed by the umpire for rule violations. A starting player can start, be substituted for and then reenter once during a game.
Runner crossing the plate. 2006 ASA Official Rules of Softball Rule 5 Section 5 B & C
B. No run shall be scored if the third out of the inning is the result of:
1. A batter-runner being called out prior to reaching first base or any other runner forced out due to the batter becoming a batter-runner. On an appeal play, the force out is determined when the appeal is made, not when the infraction occurred.
2. A runner being put out by a tag or live ball appeal play prior to the lead runner touching home plate.
3. A preceding runner is declared out on an appeal play. NOTE: An appeal can be made after the third out in order to nullify a run.
C. No run shall be scored if a 揻ourth out?is the result of an appeal of a base missed or left too soon on a runner who has scored.
In other words, if it isn't listed above, the run should be scored.
I hope that's clear as mud. If you have any other questions, please ask!
