softball scoring situation

Question
Hi! I'm the scorekeeper for a 12-13 year old girls' team in our
town rec league. We had a situation the other day which I
thought would interest an expert. The other team had runners
on first and third with one out. The batter hits a pop fly
between the first baseman and right fielder. The first baseman
gets in her glove and drops it, but the right fielder catches it
before it hits the ground, two outs. The runner from third
thought the ball hit the ground, so she did not tag up, and
touched homeplate just before the runner at first was caught off
first base by the right fielder and was tagged for the third out.
It didn't seem like we could have then thrown the ball to third
and had the runner on third base called out, because then that
would be four outs. Neither could we have the pitcher take the
mound and throw to third on appeal, because three outs had
been made and the inning was over. Is there any way we could
have prevented this run from scoring? Thak you, Mike Ecsedy
Answer
Hello Michael
This is called a "Fourth out appeal"
An appeal may be made after the third out as long as it is made properly. The defensive team makes an appeal at third base before the infielders leave the infield. The runner on third would then be declared out also, and the run would not count.
