Ball hits runner

2016/7/15 17:54:07

Question
If a ball being thrown in from outfield or being thrown to a baseman touches the runner on her way to a base--is the runner out?  The recipient did not catch the ball and did not have control of the ball.

Also, if the first baseman captures the ball on the ground and doesn't pick it up (kind of like her mitt was a tent over the ball), while her foot is on base--is the runner out or safe?

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

If a runner is hit with a thrown ball (and doesn't intentionally interfere) and the ball stays in play, we simply continue to have a live ball.

If the ball goes out of play we would award bases based on the runner's location at the time of the throw.

Next question...that is a "trap" and is not a legal catch or control.  Runner would be safe.

have a nice weekend
