Question
A.S.A My question is once a ball is hit in fair play and is knocked foul by a player does it becocome a foul ball? And if a runner gets on base and is pushed off the base by the basmen holding the ball is the player out? And who would and what could I do to file a complaint on the umpire who made these calls at our childs allstar softball game in Galveston Tx which caused us to lose the game..
Answer
Thanks for the question Ray!
A ball can't really be knocked foul. A ball is fair or foul based on where the ball is located when it is first touched. Where the player is standing, doesn't come into play. If the ball is touched over fair territory (on the ground or in the air), then it's fair, regardless of where the feet are of the defensive person. If the ball over foul territory (on the ground or in the air), again then it's foul, regardless of where the feet are of the defensive person. So a person could be standing in foul territory and reach into fair territory and make a ball fair because it doesn't matter where the person is standing.
If a runner gets on base and is pushed off... that's a judgment call. But obviously if a runner is blatantly pushed off the bag on my field the runner would be safe. That's rather unsportsmanlike of a defensive person to do that. If it's an accident, that's one thing, but if it's intentional, that's something else.
If you feel you need to talk to someone about an umpire, I would contact the organization running the league or tournament. If you really want them to listen, be as objective as you possibly can be. Hit good solid umpiring points and be very professional... you'll have the best chance of getting someone to listen. Also, you may want to get more than just yourself to contact he league or tournament with similar arguments.
Good luck!
