Triple Play

2016/7/15 17:53:07

Question
This occurred during my daughter's 10U game.

Runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Both runners got a lead off and began running. A pop-up was caught by the pitcher, and neither of the runners tagged up.  The pitcher than ran and stepped on third base (before the runner going home returned) and touched the runner from 2nd base while she was occupying third base.

The umpire waited until the pitcher threw the ball back to 2nd to make the third out call.

I am thinking that this should have been an unassisted triple play.

Answer
Hi Donald.

My first reaction is me too!  But it is a live ball appeal so in addition to the tag the pitcher needed to appeal, tag..."left early" or something similar

Even the touch at 2nd had there been no tag at 3rd should be verbally appealed.

If there was no question the runner left early and everbody knew it, would I have given an out on the tag at 3rd...yea, probably.
