Time Expiring

Question
ASA, Men's "D".
We were in a game last week down 11 to 10, the home team leading, with less than a minute to play. Full count, 2 outs, the last batter hits a pop fly, way up, just outside of the 2nd baseline. As the ball is coming down the umpire calls "Time expired.", "Game.". 1st, we've never heard an umpire call "Game" in the middle of the play. Shouldn't he have let the play finish before calling it? 2nd, the player was distracted by this call and did not catch the ball. The umpire said it didn't matter, even if he had caught the ball? Ok. So time expired during play. We can understand that if that is correct, we wish he just would have explained it that way.
So, what exactly is the rule on play continuing into the next inning as time expires? As the visiting team you get the third out and time expires just after that, where is the line drawn? Do you just have to get the third out, get off the field, or get a batter to the box, etc., before time expires?
Answer
Hi Trey,
I got to admit this is a new one, the ball is in the air and you get "time expired" "game". The umpire must have a great watch.
ASA has very few rules on timed games. On the ones they do, no inning can start after xxx amount of time, so you would not end a game in the middle of an inning. The next inning starts as soon as the 3rd out of the previous inning is recorded.
If this is a local rule it's a little weird to have an absolute time when all play stops.
