ASA Slow Pitch Softball rule

Question
Dr. Ambrose,
Scenario: Batter hits "no doubt" three run homer. He carries the bat around the basepaths till he reaches 3rd and drops it at his team's dugout before heading to home plate. Umpire calls out batter for doing so. The first two runs are counted, but the third- the batter- is called out. This is a "beer league" game, but ASA rules apply (other than league specific). Carrying the bat is not a league specific rule. Is this an ASA rule and if so, what is the correct ruling for this scenario?
Thank you,
Bob O'Donnell
Answer
Hi Bob,
That's just stupid and it's also wrong. One of my long time mentors who happens to be a Hall of Fame umpire taught me that good umpires umpire when they have to. Why do you need to umpire in this situation?
poe 51 "There is no penalty when a player carries a bat to 1st or any other base."
You can't use it as a weapon or interfere with a defensive player making a play but that's just common sense.
Print this out and show it to the umpire.
