Question
could you give me some tips on hitting effectively and consistently
Answer
Practice...he, he. Before I write anything as far as "tips" goes, the best advice I can give is to find someone that really knows how to hit, for example, a professional baseball player. If they can hit well, then they can teach it well. I never really learned how to hit before I met some semi pro players. I got a lot of instruction from coaches, but they could never really teach me to hit like a star and in baseball and softball you either have it or you don't and if you don't it takes a lot more than hitting videos and advice here and there.
Baseball and softball (even slow pitch) have the same swing. In fastpitch you have no time for mistakes. In slowpitch you have all day to hit a ball it seems like and hitting mechanics are less important. A slow pitch hitter can pull a ball and yank it down the left field line over the fence, but in fastpitch that can get you into some major trouble.
Probably the biggest mistake slow pitch hitters make is trying to yank everything! Although some people can do this, not everyone can. I would make sure you can hit outside pitches to the right side of the field, down the middle pitches back up the middle and inside pitches down the left side.
Unless you have power to hit the ball over the fence, I suggest hiting the ball down.
Other tips for you could be little things like keeping your body closed and exploding on the ball at the very last second. Make sure you do not start your swing too early therefore losing your explosive power.
If I knew how you hit, I think I could help you a little more... What kinds of problems do you have when you hit? Do you pop up too much? Ground out too much? Swing and miss?
