How to play softball - defense positions/ pitching

hello theank you so much for information on how to play 3rd base, I was wondering if you could tell me the basics of playing short stop, i am not quite shure when the short has to cover secound base, also why does the short stop have to cover 2nd base. I also want to ask you what are the fundamentals of being the pitcher.
