Question
runner of first, no one out..batter hits pop up
to 2b.  umpire calls batter out..runner
retreats to ist, batter stops running.

2b drops ball..did not appear intentional

umpire allows defense to complete double play

correct call made or should play have been called
dead due to initial call

Answer
Thanks for the question!

Sounds like the umpire thought there was an infield fly afoot.  In this case, I would suck it up and kill the play with a dead ball, rule intentional drop and put the runner back on first.  I've umpired enough games to know ball players know how to fake a dropped ball well.  I could also call umpire obstruction and protect both runners and put them on 1st and 2nd.  One of those "you gotta be there" kind of plays.  But I wouldn't have allowed a double play!

I hope this helps answer your question, if not please reply!
