Question
If a batter ball hits off the glove of a pitcher, then hits the runner going to 3rd base, is the runner out? Is the ball a live ball or is the play dead? Also, if a batter ball hits an umpire, is the play dead?
Answer
Hi Bethany,
Once a ball is deflected by the defense as long as the runner cannot avoid contact and does not intentionally interfere with the ball we continue to have a live ball, the runner is not out.
Umpires, it depends
1) if the umpire is struck before it passes an infielder, excluding the pitcher, we have a dead ball and the b-r is awarded 1st base and all other runners advance only if forced.
2) If the umpire is struck after it passes an infielder, excluding the pitcher we simply continue to have a live ball.
