ASA look back rule

2016/7/15 17:45:13

Question
Mark,

No one on base.
Batter is walked, runs to 1st, continues past 1st without hesitation directly toward 2nd.
Catcher throws ball to pitcher, ball received and in control by pitcher in the circle while the runner is still running toward 2nd, but not yet having touched 2nd. Pitcher has control in the circle and does not make a play on the runner but does not assume her pitching stance. Runner rounds 2nd, and without hesitation continues to run toward 3rd.

Questions:
1) must runner stop at 2nd, i.e. is continuing past 2nd a
look back rule violation if the pitcher simply stands in
the circle but does not assume her pitching position on the pitching plate.
2) How about of the pitcher assumes her stance on the pitching plate while the runner is between 1st and 2nd, must the runner now stop at 2nd?

thanks,
Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,

This answer does not apply to JO 10U

A runner legally advancing may not be stopped by the pitcher stepping (or receiving the ball)on the plate with the ball in their possession.  So assuming the pitching stance has no effect on this scenerio.

As long as the runner does not stop, fake, etc. it is legal.
