Question
what are some exercises i can do during the off season to stay in shape and increase my ability?

Answer
Hi Melissa,

Sorry it took awhile to respond, my computer has been down.  What type of exercises you do in the off season has a lot to do with which position you play.  Almost all positions require speed so I would recommend sprints and swimming to keep your legs in playing shape.  Catcher's really have to concentrate on keeping the legs in great shape due to the stress on the knees.  A stationary bike is good for this and a steady diet of "duck walks."  This consists of walking about 50 feet at a time in a squatted position and really strengthens the muscles used during catching.  If you are a pitcher, you want to concentrate on strengthening the wrist and shoulder because this will result in more speed.  To sum it up, Melissa, almost any type of physical activity where you have to exert yourself will increase strength and stamina and have you ready for the long season.  I prefer swimming and the stationary bike over most other things because there is little chance for injury.  (always stretch first though)  I hope this was helpful and please contact me if there is anything else I can do for you.

Coach Mike
