Question
The first batter in the inning hits a line drive and thinks he can make it to third, gets thrown out at third from a relay from short. The umpire at home called him out and the umpire on the field called him safe. Who gets the call?
Answer
If you haven't yet - you may want to ask this question to Dr. Mark Ambrose, he is a registered ASA umpire on the softball allexperts board and may have a better answer.
If you have two umpires (one on the bases and one behind the plate) typically the question isn抰 who gets the call it抯 who had the best view or angle to make the call.
By your description of the play the base umpire probably was behind first on the start of the play and as the play moved forward the plate umpire probably had the better angle on the play at third.
Nevertheless the umpires should work together on close or controversial plays and should take time out from the game to consult with each other before making the definitive call on a difficult play.
