Question
Home team down one run, bottom of the 6th Major LL Softball. Two out. Runner on second base. Batter-runner draws ball four and runs hard to first while runner on 2nd takes lead after ball crosses plate. Catcher immediaetly throws to pitcher who is within circle. While batter-runner over-runs first toward right field fence line( as if beating out single . Pitcher immediaetly throws to first while runner on second breaks toward third. First base catches throw from pitcher and tags batter-runner returning to first. Then the first baseman walks off the field in celibration while the runner from second scores.
Umpire seems confused, then calls batter-runner out.
Right call?
Thanks Steve

Answer
Did the umpire make the right call? The way you described it - "no" - however then again I don't know LL Softball rules, I抦 only familiar with ASA rules.

The batter is allowed to overrun first base if she gets a base on balls. She would only be in jeopardy of being tagged out by the first baseman if she made or faked an attempt to advance to second base after she has passed first base.

I would have challenged the call by the umpire. Regardless if the umpire seems confused or not if he/she judged the runner is out because she made or faked an attempt to second and was tagged out off base then the game is over.

However if the umpire ruled that the runner isn't allowed to overrun first base on a walk and was tagged out for being off base I would have immediately filed a game protest for incorrect application of the rule.
