Question
HI. I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT MY 12 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. SHE PITCHES ON A TRAVEL 12U FASTPITCH TEAM AND IS PITCHING WITH A 12IN BALL AT 40 FT, HOWEVER SHE IS ALSO IS PLAYING REC BALL AND THEY USE A 11 INCH BALL AND PITCH FROM 35 FT.
IS THAT GOING TO SCREW HER MOTION AND RELEASE POINT UP, OR WILL SHE BE OKAY. I KNOW THE DISTANCE SHOULDN'T MATTER, IT WILL JUST SEEM FASTER, BUT WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE BALL SIZE.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS,
LESA
Answer
Hello Lesa,
If your daughter is an advanced pitcher (if she is pitching for a travel team, I'm assuming she is), I wouldn't advise going back and forth between balls. As you said, the distance shouldn't be a problem, but I personally wouldn't want my daughter pitching the 11 inch ball.
I'm not telling you to pull her from the Rec. league, but I would have her focus on other positions in Rec ball such as Catcher or shortstop. I'm sure this will create problems with the Rec coach, since most Rec teams are lucky to have one legitimate pitcher, let alone two. She is only 12, so I don't think it will cause any long term problems with form, it's more of an issue with grip and weight than anything. I'm sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, I can only tell you what I would do in that position. I hope this was helpful.
