Question
I have a 10 yr old niece who has been playing softball for 3 years now. I myself pitched in the minor leagues and decided to see if the good arm was hereditary, she has been clocked at speeds of on average 42 to 45 mph just wondering if this is an average for 10 yr olds. Your insight would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Hello Julius,

That sounded pretty good to me, but I did do some checking and found the below scale in one of Larry's previous answers.  If she has not had any form of teaching, I would advise you to look into finding a pitching Coach.  I'm assuming since you said she has "played" for three years and didn't mention her pitching for three years, that this is something she has just started.  Sounds to me like you may have a future all-star there!  Here is the scale that Larry submitted:

10-Under  Typical 37-41 MPH  Top Pitchers 43-46
12-Under  Typical 44-47 MPH  Top Pitchers 50-53
14-Under  Typical 46-49 MPH  Top Pitchers 52-55
16-Under  Typical 50-53 MPH  Top Pitchers 54-57
18-Under  Typical 53-56 MPH  Top Pitchers 58-61
College  Typical 59-64 MPH  Top Pitchers 65-72
