shortstop

Question
my daughter is playing shortstop for the jv team in high school, well if there is a runner on second only, the batter is not bunting, and the third baseman is only about 3 feet in front of the bag, the coach has her running over to cover third after every pitch, shouldn't the third baseman just back up?  By the time the girl on second breaks off the bag she has just about beat my girl to third and causes a lot of confusion for the third baseman.  They also have her doing the same thing with a runner on first and second.  I could understand this if the batter was bunting, but she isn't.

Answer
She does have third base responsibility for both of those scenario's involving a bunt.  I'd agree that once the threat of a bunt is gone, the third baseman should cover the bag.  I wouldn't advise saying anything to the Coach about it though.  Most Coaches have their own reasons for doing things a certain way and don't typically care for advice from parents.  I've disagreed with certain things being taught to my daughters before also, but out of respect for the coach, I told my daughters to do things the way the coach instructed and not to complain.  Sorry it took so long to respond to this, but this time of season is very busy.  Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Coach Mike
