batting helmets

Question
I am doing a report for school and wondering why cages masks are now in forced on batting helmets, on an 18-and under softball team.

Answer
Hello Vanessa,

If I had to guess, I'd say that the insurance companies are the main reason.  I understand your probably implying that at that age, it should be the players decision and I don't totally disagree with that.  The problem is that some girls 14-18 years old can throw the ball close to 70 miles an hour and this will do extensive damage if taken directly to the face or foul tipped to the face.  A lot of girls now have fantastic rise balls and it is very common to see a batter chase a high pitch and foul it off into their face mask.  It really isn't smart to play without a mask given that information.  I guess it's similar to people who opt to not wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle.  If you aren't smart enough to protect yourself, laws or rules in this case are put into place to do it for you.  I hope this was helpful, and please let me know how the report turns out.
