MODIFED PITCH

Question
Hi I am one of the coaches of my daughter 10u modifed pitch team. In this league we can pitch fastpitch or modifed(meaning underhanded). I of course was a slow pitcher in my time, so I know that slow pitch is a lot different than fastpitch. None of our girls have never pitched before. I think that for that reason we should teach them to fastpitch(with the windmill), instead of teaching them to slowpitch then next year having to reteach them to fastpitch. The other coach thinks that they are not any difference. That for this year he thinks its easier for them to slowpitch and if they do they won't have as many walks as if they fastpitched. What do you think? Will this hurt them for next year when they have to change everything?
Answer
Hello T.D.,
I think you are both correct. I don't think there will be any harm in slow pitching this season except for the fact that you will set them back one year of fastpitch experience. Any girl who has aspirations of pitching in High School and possibly College should begin her training as young as possible. To answer your question: If winning is a big priority now, then let them pitch slowpitch, it will have no negative effects when they convert over to fastpitch. If player development is a higher priority this season, then by all means start teaching the girls fast pitch mechanics. I hope this was helpful and please let me know if you have any other questions.
