Batter-Runner overrunning First

Question
I had a batter hit a base hit, he beat the throw to first and was safe.  When he stopped to return to first he turned to his left.  The first baseman tagged him and the umps called him out saying he turned to second base, but he never crossed the foul line.  All he did was turn around.  I'm just wondering if he should have been called out?

Answer
Heath,

It depends on how far to the left he turned. If he only turned slightly to the left then he probably shouldn't be called out. This call is usually a umpire's judgement call. Depending on if he turned with intent to continue to second or just to go back to the base. So in my opinion, the runner should have been called safe.
