Thrown Bat

2016/7/15 17:40:57

Question
In a 12 and under fast pitch game, a girl swung and hit the ball and threw the bat backwards hitting the umpire in the shoulder or helmet.  The batter was called out, with no warning about throwing the bat.  I tried looking this up in the NSA rules and couldn't find anything about thrown bats.  Where can it be found?  Also, I assume in this instance the ball is dead and play is stopped but I can't find anything to verify this?  What are the rules.

Answer
Fred,

I'm not sure where to find this in the rules. But usually, at that level, the batter's team should be assessed a team warning. If it happens again, then the batter can be called out and maybe even ejected from the game depending on the league. And yes, the ball is immediately called dead. Runners cannot advance after the thrown bat.

Hope this helps,

Jesse
