Question
Hello Mike.
My daughter plays in a girls U12 softball league. A batter had hit a ball that came off her bat and landed in the batter's box. The umpire ruled it a fair ball. Was this the correct ruling ?

Answer
Depends on what part of the box.  Draw a straight line from the back corner of the plate to the foul pole in Right and Left field and any ball which settles within these lines is considered fair.  This line will dissect the batters box and all balls which settle to the fair side of the line even within the batters box are fair balls.  A ball on the foul line is a fair ball also.  Also a ball that comes to rest on home plate is also a fair ball.

I should note that a ball which strikes the batter while she is still in the box is considered a foul ball no matter of the location in the box where the batter came in contact with the ball.  I hope this helps.
