overthrow at first

Question
My daughter recently played in a 10u fastpitch tournament. She hit the ball past the shorstop to the left fielder. The left fielder fielded the ball and tried to throw her out at first base. My daughter ran to first and touching first turned to the right. The overthrown ball went into the opposing teams dugout. The umpire did not award my daughter second base because she turned to the right and did not try to advance. I thought that the ball going into the dugout was a dead ball and the runner is awarded second base. What would be the correct call on this play? Thank you for your help.
Answer
Hi Steve,
"The umpire did not award my daughter second base because she turned to the right and did not try to advance."... that has nothing to do with it anyway, anyhow, nothing.
We have a dead ball and the runner is awarded 2 bases from the last base touched at the time of the throw. In this case the award should have been 2nd base.
