Substitute Pitcher

2016/7/15 17:38:32

Question
Is there anything in ASA rules that prohibits a pitcher from swapping positions with another fielder and pitching alternating innings? Assuming players remain in the game and the line up does not change, is there any limitation to the number of pitching substitutions?

Answer
Hello Gerry,

The only rules governing swapping pitchers is that a pitcher can only be removed and returned to pitcher once per inning.  When a pitcher starts pitching to a batter, she must continue to pitch until that batter has either advanced to first, been put out, or the third out of the inning happens.  If she is removed prior to this, she is not allowed to return as pitcher for that inning.
