Pitchers Hands

2016/7/15 17:37:09

Question
Game 2, Arizona vs Tenn. 2007 College WS Finals.  Arizona pitcher has a blister on her pitching hand. Has a band-aide covering it (index finger).  I thought it is illegal to have any foreign item on a pitchers 'ball' hand.  Would this be correct?  If so what is the penalty? If this is allowed are there rules/guidelines as to excessive use?  Could a pitcher then say wear a batting glove for added grip?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Vince,

Great game last night though I'm rooting for the underdog Tenn.

Just a side note the home plate umpire in the 1st 2 championship games is a friend of mine from MI.  I've worked w/ Bryan for over 15 years and he is truly one of the top umpires in the country.  I think he did an outstanding job last night, did you see his position on that banger at home, for the lead in the 10th...perfect!  Occasionally I ask him for his views on some of these questions, so you have probably seen his input in this forum.

I'm not an NCAA official but I looked it up and
the pitcher's fingers....may be taped for injury provided the tape is a neutral color.
You cannot wear a batting glove on your pitching hand.  It's very similar to ASA rules.

I thought it is illegal to have any foreign item on a pitchers 'ball' hand.  Would this be correct?    That's not correct, in ASA play a pitcher shall not wear any item on the pitching hand which may in the umpire's judgement be distracting to the batter.  I would allow band-aids etc. for injury.  Batting gloves may not be worn on the pitching hand.

You cannot put a foreign substance on the ball maybe that's what your thinking of.  ie you cannot apply resin in the glove and then place the ball in there, resin must be applied to the hands only or a pitcher who licks their fingers must wipe them off before bringing them into contact with the ball.
