Question
situation: runners on first and second base.batted ball is misplayed by pitcher(deflects off her glove and rolls toward second baseman who collides with baserunner running to second base.umpire no.1 claims baserunner is out for being hit by batted ball.umpire no.2 says runner is out for making contact with second baseman.which umpire is correct and does it make a difference whether or not the pitcher touches the ball
Answer
Hello Will,
Assuming that the ball did hit the runner, then both are actually correct. A batted ball which contacts a runner prior to passing any fielder other than the pitcher is a dead ball and runner is out. It is also a dead ball out if the runner interferes with a player attempting to make a play on a batted ball. (this includes balls deflected off the pitcher). Technically, she had to of either been hit by the ball or collided into the fielder first. Whichever of those happened first would of resulted in a dead ball and she would of been out at that point. The runner going to third would of been obligated to return to second base also. I hope this answers your question.
