sub runners

Question
I coach in a slow pitch league(8-12 year olds) and we had a unique situation last night with no guideline to follow. My SS got hit in the knee early in the game, but continued to play. We wanted to put in a sub runner after she batted safely. We have 12 players, and rotate the two xtras every other inning. All players bat. We wanted to sub the last player out in the current inning. The opposing coach argued it should be the last out in the last inning. Is there a guideline to follow in this situation?
Answer
Hello Barb,
I would need more information to accurately answer this question. First, I would need to know what the sanctioning body is that your league plays under. (USSSA, ASA, NSA,.etc..) They all differ slightly. I don't know of any sanctioning body which allows free substitution which you apparently use. Every starter and every sub is only allowed to re-enter a game once after being replaced in the batting order. The most girls you can put in a batting order is 11 not 12, so I'm guessing that if you have all 12 girls batting, you league has altered the rules. If you go to www.usssa.com then click on the slowpitch tab, you can print out a complete rulebook including substitutions rules.
