Question
QUESTION: In ASA softball, what is the call if a batter hits a pitch after it has bounced in the dirt in front of home plate...?
Is there a dead ball call on this play..?
Also, if ball bounces in dirt and strikes the batter, is it the same as batter getting hit without the ball touching the dirt first..? Does she still get first base...? Are there any
Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Mike
In SP the ball is dead
In FP the ball is alive can be hit and if the batter is hit and she makes an effort to stay out of the way, dead ball, we award 1st base.

QUESTION: Thanks for the answer. I have another one.
ASA Fastpitch 12U - Batter is hit on the forearm while swinging (sort of defensively) at an inside pitch. She is hurt bad enough that she has to be taken out of the game.
Question 1 - What is the call on getting hit while swinging in defense at an inside pitch...?
Question 2 - If blue decides it's legal swing and a strike, what do we do about the batter that cannot continue the at bat because of injury....?
Thanks, you guys are great!!
ANSWER: Hi Mike,
If she swings and the ball hits her it is a strike and if strike 3 an out.
You would replace her w a legal sub and the sub would assume the ball and strike count
If a sub was not available, then you have to play shorthanded, and an out would be taken.

QUESTION: This question concerns 10U ASA situation. R1 at second. Two outs. Batter bunts down first base line. As pitcher runs towards the line and ball, she slips and her leg slides accross the base line and makes contact with batter. Pitcher gets the ball and in attempting to tag batter, she misses with the ball and umpire silently calls "delayed dead-ball interference", raising a fisted arm out from his body claiming pitcher intentionally tried to trip batter with leg that had slid across base line. Pitcher then throws to first getting the batter out . R1 goes to third and keeps going to home as fielders think there are 3 outs. Batter continues on to second before umpire verbally calls dead ball . Lets batter stay on second and R1 is allowed to score. Umpire made no verbal call until batter reached second base.
My question is, where should batter and R1 end up?
Is this a correct call?
Shouldn't the play end and dead ball be called as soon as batter was out at first...?
Answer
Hi Mike,
What the umpire actually called was obstruction, which is a delayed dead ball. No verbal is given, we leave our arm out long enough to be seen as obstruction.
As soon as the b-r is put out at 1st we call dead ball and award the b-r the base she would have made had there been no obstruction. In this case it looks like we'll award 1st. I don't know why the umpire awarded her 2nd base or call dead ball when the play was made at first.
If R1 had not yet scored when we have the dead ball they return to the last base touched at the time of the dead ball.
