Interference call and wrong dead ball call

Question
Situation was 14U NSA tournament game. Bases loaded with one out - infielders in (at base lines or inside base lines). Batter strikes ball and hits runner leaving 1st base in the base line. The field umpire calls the ball dead and runner out upon the ball striking the baserunner and all other runners return to their bases. It is questionable whether second basemen still had a play on the ball (i.e. diving slightly backwards) but nonetheless field umpire later admits that he thought the ball was past her before striking the runner. Offensive team argues that the ball was past the infielders and the runner should not have been called out. Field umpire agrees that it was past the infielder. Defensive team argues that if that was the case, then the ball should not have been called dead and defensive team would have had opportunity to pick up ball and make a play at any base(including home) which they could have easily done. Tournament director ultimately rules that stricken runner is not out and because there was a force in play all other runners advance including the runner on third to home.
Just curious how you might have rectified the situation as the TD or UIC.
Answer
Hi Brian,
I normally don't answer questions about other orgs play but this is an interesting problem.
Understand I'm answering it as an ASA tournie UIC and NSA might have different procedures.
Also please understand I did not see the play and/or get a chance to talk with the umpires.
It is questionable whether second basemen still had a play on the ball (i.e. diving slightly backwards)
This statement bothers me some, did F3 still have an opportunity to field the ball and where was the runner in relationship to F3, in front, even or behind?
The 1st thing I want to know why was a dead ball, out called in the 1st place. If the field umpire says I called it because in my opinion at the time, the ball had not yet passed an infielder. We don't have a problem, a judgement call is not protestable. I would hope this is what happened and what he saw. That he was second-guessing himself or not very experienced and was intimidated in some of the statements he made later.
but nonetheless field umpire later admits that he thought the ball was past her before striking the runner.
Then my question is why did you call dead ball, out? If he says because I thought we had interference because the runner was struck with a fair batted ball regardless that it had past an infielder and no other fielder had an opportunity to make an out, now we have a PROBLEM. This is a mis-application of the playing rules and is protestable.
Defensive team argues that if that was the case, then the ball should not have been called dead and defensive team would have had opportunity to pick up ball and make a play at any base(including home) which they could have easily done.
That's very true BUT the ball was called dead and that's what we have to deal with.
We can't do a "do-over" at least in ASA. I can't put the b-r back at home, I can't call them out because I've upheld the protest. The only thing I can do is what that UIC did being prepared to have the defensive coach "discuss" it with me. probably vigorously. And I'll give him some reasonable leeway to vent.
