advancing runners on a ball thrown out of play

2016/7/15 17:36:03

Question
Situation:   Runner on 1st 1 out.  Line drive hit sharply to the shortstop.  The runner on first comes off the bag at the strike of the bat.  The short stop catches the ball in the air and attempts to throw the runner out who is going back to first.  The ball hits the first basemans glove and shoots out of play.  The question is does the runner get second or third?

Answer
Hello John,

If a live thrown ball, other than a pitch from the pitchers plate enters a dead ball area, then the award is two bases.  If a player loses possession of a ball on a tag play, which enters a dead ball area, then the award is one base.  In this case, the runner should be awarded third base.
