Runner Hit by Batter Ball

2016/7/15 17:35:58

Question
Is it interference when a hit ball strikes a runner as they are trying to advance to another base? The situation at hand was a ball was hit between 1st and 2nd and our right fielder was coming up to field this routine grounder. She clearly could have made the play at 1st. The ball hit the runners leg and deflected out to center field. By the time we got to the loose ball two runs scored and this runner was on 3rd base.

Thank you
Dewayne Mundell

Answer
Hi Dewayne,

If a runner is hit by a fair batted ball after it passes an infielder and another infielder has an opportunity to make an out, the runner would be out.

The rule doesn't mention an outfielder, so the ball would continue to be live and we play on.

Hi Dewayne,

I revised my answer, I mis-read your question...sorry
