Question
Hi Dr. Ambrose,
I was reading back through old answer, and this one caught my eye and I had another question about it:
"Just a little more info because I've got a minute....
r1 on 1st.
deep fly ball to the outfield and r1 is running.
Ball is caught and r1 is between 2nd and 3rd.
Fielder throws the ball and r1 now heads back to 1st to tag. He is between 2nd and 1st when the throw goes out of play. The award would be home because the last base touched at the time of the throw was second.
With a dead ball he must be given the opportunity to go back and retouch 1st."
In this case, the runner still needs to retouch first, before going around the bases to score, correct? Otherwise, even though the runner was awarded home (two bases from second at the time of the throw), the defense would be able to appeal before the next pitch?
Answer
Hi Kevin,
You are absolutely corect that the runner must re-touch 1st before taking the award of home. They need to retouch 1st and then 2nd, 3rd and home.
"dead ball, runner is awarded home"
They must be given the opportunity,(the umpire must not "direct" them) but if they did not retouch 1st, on appeal they would be out.
