Fielder interfering with a runner

2016/7/15 17:35:39

Question
There was a runner on first with two outs.  I hit a ball to right field and it looked like I would get a double or triple.  The baserunner on first rounded 2nd and headed towards third when she slammed in to the shortstop who was obstructing her path.  The shortstop then gave the runner a bear hug.  By this time, I was on 2nd but decided I better head back towards first as the runner was going to have to go back to second and we would have both been on 2nd base.  I was tagged out as I headed back towards first.  The umpire agreed that the runner was interfered with but called me out.  Is this correct?

Answer
HI Ben,

Defensive players obstruct, offensive players interfere, so here we have obstruction of R1 by F6, this is a delayed dead ball and we protect the runner(s) to the base(s) they would have made had there been no obstruction.

If you had stayed at 2nd even if R1 returned to 2nd you would have been ok and R1 could not by rule be put out between the bases they were obstructed.  The umpire would simply call time when play ended and put R1 on 3rd and leave you at 2nd.

Since you decided to go back to 1st, the call is correct in my opinion.
