Base Runners Retreating

2016/7/15 17:35:34

Question
Runners on first and second, 1 out. Ball hit to SS who fields it cleanly and looks to tag the runner who was on second now running to 3rd. The runner retreats back towards 2nd base. Umpire calls the runner out for retreating. Is this the right call? I thought retreating is only applied to running to 1st base.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Adam,

you are correct, a base runner can retreat back toward a base they are forced from to avoid a tag, there is nothing illegal in just that action.

"I thought retreating is only applied to running to 1st base"

that is also correct
