ASA Slow pitch softball - 10th player out rule?

Question
We just had a league game where we had a questionable call that I would like clarified if you can. We were playing a team that had only 9 players. In the rule book it states that we must play with 10 but can play with 9 and the 10th spot in the lineup is an out.
Here is where the questionable call came into affect. We have one out with a guy on first. The batter hits a ground ball to our short stop. He grabs the ball touches second and throughs the runner out at first for a double play. So in my mind we made the 3rd out before the 10th batter came to bat. So should we have started the next inning with an automatic out? The umpire called it as the 3rd out was the 10th batter even before the double play occured. That doesn't make sense to me so I'm just looking for an official ruling if you have one.
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Bryce,
1 out, r1 is on 1st, b9 hits into a double play, 3 outs, 1/2 inning over, correct? Ok.
Next inning b10 is out and b1 comes to bat w/ 1 out.
That's how it should be.
b10 had not yet come to bat so I don't understand why the umpire would call a "4th" out in that 1/2 inning. If b10 was a real person, they would be the 1st batter in the next 1/2 inning, or did I not understand your question correctly?
