Question
Recently a ball was hit to left field and the outfielder jumped caught the ball and fell over the fence but never came back down in play. I am an ASA umpire (that was playing at the time) and thought it should have been a home run. The on field umpire ruled it an out. Is it a home run ?and where is the ruling in the ASA book. Thanks

Answer
Hi Victor.

If the fielder had control and maintained control of the ball before and as they touched the ground out of play, it is a valid catch, an out, dead ball and all runners awarded 1 base.

If they had control of the ball only after they touched out of play it is a home run.
