Over running first base in fair territory

2016/7/15 17:33:46

Question
In a softball game i was umpiring, the runner over ran first base and turned toward fair ground.  He did not make an attempt to go to second base though.  The infielder through the ball to the first baseman before the runner got back to first base.  I called the runner safe because the runner never made an attempt to go to second base.  I explained that unless the runner makes an attempt to run to second base, they are protected.  Was the call correct?

Answer
Hi John,

You are correct, after over-running 1st a runner can legally turn either to their right or their left when returning to the base.  Any attempt to advance to 2nd makes them liable for an appeal out if tagged with the ball while off base.  RS (poe)37
