Question
Hi, My question is this: runners on 2nd & 3rd, foul ball hit, runner on 2nd goes to 3rd, runner on 3rd heads toward home and returns to 3rd, runner from 2nd still on 3rd, both runners are touching 3rd base.  Are they safe to return to positions held before foul being hit or is one out and if so,which one?

Answer
Hello Joyce,

Assuming that the ball was not caught in the air, they are allowed to return to the base they had prior to the ball being hit.  Even if it is a live ball, as long as the prior runner does not pass the runner ahead of her, she would not be out.  She could return to second or the runner that was initially on third could still run home.
