Diving

Question
I am a pitcher and outfielder.  My coach makes us dive at ground balls at practice, I'm always the last one to dive and make the catch.  I need some help taking it slowly, or step by step until I get it.  Got any tips or drills.

Answer
Hello Reba,

I'm assuming he is alternating you at diving left or right to simulate a game type situation.  The key is to keep your weight balanced and don't get caught leaning in the wrong direction.  Keep you back parallel to the ground in your fielding position.  This will help keep you low and speed up your first reaction time.  You should have your weight on the balls of your feet and not on your heels.  Other than that, you basically have to have the mind set that you aren't worried about getting hurt and stay low during your dive.  It is similar to the mind set you have for sliding.  Good luck!
