Dimaggio Rule

2016/7/15 17:33:22

Question
I was reading a recent answer on this site regarding bobbled balls and tag-ups.
The answer given was the Dimaggio Rule: once contact is made the player may
leave the bag. Does the same apply if the fielder who first touches the ball is
NOT the one who catches it. In other words, if the left fielder bobbles the ball
and the centre fielder catches it after the bobble, does the same rule apply.
When can the runner advance?

Answer
Hi Mike,

the runner can advance as soon as a defensive player touches the ball.  It doesn't matter what happens after that.

Let's say sharp high line drive that F6 (who is 6'9") jumps and the ball touches his glove but continues into left-center and is caught by F8.  R1 can legally leave the base as soon as F6 touched the ball.
