Force out situation

2016/7/15 17:33:08

Question
In a slow pitch softball game, with runners on 1b &2B,batter hit a soft pop up to ss, umpire didnot rule infield fly and runners didnot advance to next base but stayed on their base. SS threw ball to 3B, 3Baseman threw ball to 1B to put out batter. 1B ran to 2b and tagged runner standing there and touched 2B. Umpires rules runner at 2B didnot have to run? and awarded defensive team a double play. Disagreement whether existing base runners must advance and whether a triple play should have been called.

Answer
Hi Dick,

If I understand your question, No IF, ball drops, runner is forced out at 3rd, f5 throws the ball to 1st and the b-r is now out and R2 is ON 2nd when they are tagged by F3

If that's right R2 is safe.  There's no reason he should be out.

"Umpires rules runner at 2B didnot have to run?"  I don't understand how this pertains.
