Question
2 outs, runner at third. Batter swings for a third strike, catcher misses the ball. Third base runner runs to home, catcher throws ball to the pitcher in order to get the third base runner out at home. Instead pitcher misses the ball, infielder gets the ball and throws to first base, gets the batter out on first for the third out. Does the run score because the third base runner touched home before the play was completed at first base?
I say the run counts because the catcher made a play for home instead of first base.
Answer
Hi Richard,
The run would not count. ANYTIME the 3rd out of an inning is a force out (as this is, because the batter became a b-r) no runs can score.
It doesn't matter if R1 crossed the plate before the out at 1st and it doesn't matter there was some other play attempted 1st.
