Hitting to opposite field

Question
Hello Mike, I am a fairly accomplished spray-hitter with power that essentially taught myself to hit since I never played baseball.  Most of my teammates (coed league) value my advice and suggestions.  Many times I have offered to work with individual players at the cages to help try different things like hitting to the opposite field, a HUGE skill to possess in Coed.

I have found that slow-pitch girls that have a history of fast-pitch are extremely difficult to teach to hit to right since they are taught to have a quick-wristy swing instead of a patient powerful one.  I have tried numerous techniques to get two of my female teammates to hit to right, but I'm not breaking through to them.  Do you have some suggestions that I can use on these girls?  The good news is that they acknowledge the importance and are eager to learn.  The bad news is that their swings are so ingrained that making changes is difficult for them.  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Terence,

This is also an excellent skill to possess in both fast pitch softball and baseball as well.

Obviously two key ingredients to hitting to the opposite field are pitch selection and timing.  I would suggest bringing the old hitting tee out on this one.  By placing the tee at various positions in the strike zone, you can actually let the girls see how key timing and pitch location are in respect to hitting to the opposite field.  You can also close their stance up and make sure they understand to let the pitch get a little deeper in the strike zone before initiating contact.  By looking for outside pitches, hitting balls placed toward the back of the strike zone off the tee, and closing up the stance, you should begin to see results.  Good luck and let me know if this helps.
