Considering moving from slow pitch to fast pitch

Question
Our daughter will be nine in April and is with a slow pitch softball league(her dad is the coach). What are the advantages or disadvantages of keeping her in the slow pitch league vs. moving her to a fast pitch team? Our high school is fast pitch. At what age would you recommend a move to fast pitch?
Answer
Katie, Under ASA Fast pitch rules, children under 8 play coach pitch(where the coach pitches the ball). They then move to under 10 and begin kid pitch and continue through out the rest of their careers.
In my opinion, Fast pitch would be the way I would go. Like you pointed out your H.S. is Fast pitch as is most, however some schools do play spring Slow pitch( this is generally to keep the girls in shape for fast pitch).
Fast pitch is a game generally being a dual between the pitcher and hitters, where as Slow pitch is more defense centered.
With regard to what age to move her, without knowing her level of ability, it would be hard for me to say but I would get her started with Fast pitch as some as possible.
Being a H.S. coach myself, I like to see kids get started early. Kids that grow up playing Fast pitch can easily go play Slow pitch, it's difficult to go from Slow pitch to Fast pitch as far as hitting goes.
What ever you decide I appreciate you encourageing your child to play ball.
Good Luck and if I can help further please let me know.
Coach Suthe.
