Velocity loss

2016/7/15 17:30:22

Question
My daughter is a high school senior and a pitcher.  She has lost about 35 lbs over the last year by getting in better shape.  She has also lost a few MPH on her fast ball.  Her velocity has consistently increased every year except the last one.  Is this common?  Can she ever get her velocity back?  Can you recommend any speed drills to help?

Answer
Dan,
Generally a girl will almost peak by the time she is senior.
It is natural to go up and down a couple MPH.
It is difficult to guess not knowing how tall she is, her level of ability, style of windmill she uses and speed of pitches.
Does she drag her back foot or does she crow hoop off of the mound. If she does not crow hoop she can gain speed by doing this. The only specific drills to gain speed is to simply run and pitch.I recommend my girls to throw at least 80 pitches a day in the off season.
Hope this was of some help.
Good Luck, Coach Suthe.
