Pitching - 8 & Under Girls Softball

Question
I recently joined the board of our softball assoc. One issue we are facing is what is the best age to introduce "live" pitching to the girls? We have tried a combination of player & coach pitch and are lucky to get through 2 innings per game due to the lack of skill at that age. We would like to try pitching machine but one argument is that the "pitchers" will be behind when they move up to 10 & under. What is your opinion?
Answer
Rusty,
In my opinion and ASA, girls don't move to kid pitch until they reach 10- under. Girls that show a desire to become a pitcher should begin pitching as soon as possible in order to be ready when they get to the 10's.
Machine pitch is ok, and is used somewhat in the early years but is limited to leagues and tournaments.
I recommend coach pitch until the girls turn 10 and at 10, if you can be lucky enough to have a girl that can get it across the plate you will be very successful.
Good Luck,
Coach Suthe.
