Question
Hi, thanks for answering. Hmmm, wouldn't you say that it is interesting to rotate your wrist in an overhand throw and then be informed it is the fastest way to throw? I understand throwing, and bring wrisst abck and snap for release, but to rotate wrist with hand and ball facing backwards then rotatoe wrist and hand again for ball release, just doesn't seem natural. Coach'es wife is not a nice person and I want to make sure I have my story straight when ask why she is teaching this tecnique. You mentioned a coach's forum, can I access it? THANKS for your time! Confused mom
Answer
As far as teaching throwing, either way will work. I teach rolling the wrist with the ball facing backwards. The idea is to turn your arm into a whip that receives its energy from the body. That is the best way that I can describe it. To me rolling the hand instead of bringing the wrist back seems to create more of a snap at the release.
As far as the coaches wife not being a nice person, you are on your own on that one :)
I don't remember what I was referring to as far as a coaches forum, I do recall talking about an umpires forum. Try these links

If a girl has a good throw without rolling the wrist back, I wouldn't change it.
Long story short, from what you are saying, it sounds like your daughters coach knows what he is talking about when teaching throwing.
As an answer to your comment, does it put more stress on a girls elbow to roll the hand when throwing? My guess would be no, but I am in no way qualified to give a definitive answer to this question.
